Playing guitar w/ headphones: is ampli necessary? -

Hello everyone, from a new member!
Ok, so here is my situation: I recently moved into a university dorm far from where I live, and as you can well imagine I do not have the freedom to blast an ampli full power when playing my Epiphone SG. Moreover the only time I have to play is in the evening-night hours, which makes everything worse.
So the point now is that I am forced to choose between get myself (I've not brought with me my ampli) a small studio ampli, to be used at very low volumes, or to play with the headphones always on: presonally I prefer the latter option.
My question is then: if I'm to play always with headphones on, is getting an ampli really that important? Can I just plug my guitar to my pc (through some guitarport or something like that) and then send it directly the headphones, or having an ampli is absolutely that necessary (even if I'm not using its cones)?
And, more important, how does a guitar through a guitarport-like device sound like? Is it that innatural?
Well, If you could give me a piece of advice on this topic I'd be very grateful! Also, if you have another solution to my issue that I haven't thought about, please let me know!!
(Also, if this isn't the right section to post this, please let me know as well!)
Thank you very much!
