There shouldn't be any problem using electric strings on an acoustic-electric, unless it's a classical guitar (made for nylon strings) which can be amplified. While classical acoustic-electrics do exist, they are a tiny minority of acoustic-electrics, and if yours has any metal strings on it it's almost certainly not a classical.
