those are mountain dulcimers, notice the goofy fret scale, that is modal
Ah, OK, I had it backwards then.

A'ight, I'm climbing up to get it back down off the shelves...

OK, got it.

First course: DAF#D
2nd course: FCAF
3rd course: FBGG
4th course: ECGC

After that come the courses of two strings each, each the same note. There are 15 courses, beginning at a low C and going up to a high C, with no sharps or flats: C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C.

Since it's missing most sharps and flats I guess it's modal? It comes with a little hammer to hit the strings, consisting of a handle, a metal bendy bit, and a little wooden mallet head on the other end.
