Actually that's not a weird start at all. I started playing in front of people (albeit a small group that met in other people's homes) in an interdenominational high school group called Young Life. LOTS of early rockers began by singing or playing in church: Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard,Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and of course the Rev. Al Green.

Just this week I went to a church band rehearsal at a church my family has been attending and is thinking about joining.
