i've potted pick-ups before, i've never actually noticed that they improved in sound per ce' but it does kill microphonic feedback, which may or may not be cool lol, kurt cobain, and j. mascis did some pretty cool shit with microphonic feedback, and by potting you also lose the acoustic component of your guitar..... if you smack your guitar and hear it in your amp, the wood is effecting your tone, if you pot a pick-up you smack it you don't hear it anymore...... i.e. the wood component of your tone is gone...... like i said it can be a good thing or a bad thing, just know all the info before you do it :-D
