I would definitely go for a multi-effects unit. Stomp boxes are great, but I find that a multi-effects unit does a great job and gets the job done for way less $$.

I like Vox and Line 6 units the best. I never messed around with Behringer. You might want to research the quality and complaints.

I don't know what your budget is, but check out the Vox Tonelab. If you are looking for something less pricey, check out the Line 6 POD. I've also read a lot of good stuff in the new(er) Digitech stuff.

Modeling units such as POD/Tonelab/RP-series/(maybe Behringer too) are also great if you'd like to record to your PC or Laptop. There's a really coll free recording program available to download online called Audacity. Check it out.
