I am a guitar player, and I dont think anything really works. and strings are cheap enough to just change them. my brother that plays bass uses mineral oil too though, and it seems to work for him.

lemon oil is what i have used for a long time on all of my necks, (ebony and rosewood)
I guess maybe one thing you should ask is what gauge of string he is...

a hard bristle tooth brush should work better...
a hard bristle tooth brush should work better than a wire brush. i always use lemon oil on my necks, and i clean them every time i change the strings.

I play D'addario on both acoustic and electric
custom 10's for electric,
and custom lights for acoustic.

I think my favorite right now would have to be planet waves black ice picks. the xtra heavy variety. I have played with jazz III xl's for a long time but i like the feel of the black ice much better....
