Desmond Dekker.

10 to 1 nobody here has ever heard of him.

Great early ska, most people today would call it reggae.
2  Gear / General Gear Talk / Re: Ever win any gear? on: August 19, 2008, 07:18:46 AM
Actually, I guess I did win something......an OD pedal from this very forum.  Many apologees for forgetting.    I DID win some gear.

Me too!  Actually, I've won a couple here.  A Tube Screamer and a Bad Monkey.

I didn't enter the current one, to give somone else a chance.  Everybody should enter, it's easy to win!

Don't know about the guitar or pedal, but Svenska, ja?

Hej, valkommen!

OK, I cheated and looked that up.  But welcome.
4  Gear / General Gear Talk / Re: Do you name your axe and what is your guitar's name? on: August 13, 2008, 07:05:43 AM
Oh I forgot, I've gotten two more guitars since I listed all their names earlier:

Pearl:

And Goldie:

We've got a batch of new members so I'ma bump this and see if we can't get some more responses.

Here's one from the Alligator, which is the unofficial University of Florida student newspaper.  It's only unofficial because they got kicked off campus in the 70's for refusing to allow the UF administration to censor their content, it's actually a pretty big newspaper, iirc one of the biggest student newspapers in the US.

Anyhow, here's a couple paragraphs from a column called "Radio Free Gainesville!" that was written by one Jose Villalba and published way back on May 23, 1996.  Back from when Crash Pad was only a 3-piece and we had a girl bassist/backing vocalist:

But there is also a genuinenes to Crash Pad that is seldom found in both signed and unsigned bands.

Where most punk bands hide their lyrics behind the distortion of their guitars, Crash Pad makes it a point to be heard.

The vocals are clear and you need not speak in tongues to understand the lyrics.   The surprising harmonies put forth by the interplay of male and female voices are an added bonus.  Crash Pad are one of those bands you'll go see over and over.

OK, peeps. let's see some press!

I can't say 'bitch."  Kids in the house.

And Ninja, expect a visit from the ASPCA.

Sadly(or gladly) I can't take the credit for my dog's deafness. It seems as cocker spaniels get older, some of them develop hearing disorders. He's pretty old at 8yrs.(That's human years, not dog, you do the math.)

Wait a sec... I resemble that remark!

Your dog's at most 56 in dog years (used to be 7x number of years but last I heard they'd revised it downward or made it more a variable scale as the dog ages).  I'm 50 myself!
7  General Category / Classifieds / Re: WTB: Epi Kat Series guitar HSC on: August 11, 2008, 08:22:21 PM
Not much to offer here, but I did own an AlleyKat once (no Bigsby).  I used a gigskinz bag that was nice, but eventually got the correct Epi case which really fit nice.

I did a price match thing to get the best deal.  I just looked and Sweetwater is $90 with free shipping.  Music123 was $100.  You could always call them to see what they'll do.  You might be able to get it for $80 shipped.

Thanks, yeah somebody on another board sussed me to Sweetwater.  That seems to be the best new price at $90 with free shipping.

What'd be great would be if I could find something used.  I have a bag it'll just barely fit in, which would be fine for church gigs, but kinda dangerous for bar shows.
8  General Category / Classifieds / WTB: Epi Kat Series guitar HSC on: August 11, 2008, 08:28:25 AM
Am looking for a hardshell case for my Epiphone WildKat w/Bigsby.  The lower bout is larger than a Les Paul, so LP cases won't work, yet guitar is smaller than a big-bodied Gretsch or 335-style guitar.  Reportedly cases for DeArmond M-series guitars work since they had larger lower bouts and some
came with Bigsbys.

Epi wants about a Benjamin for a new one, which is about twice what a hsc should cost without an Epi E on it.
9  Gear / Amplification / Re: Best amp you've ever owned. on: August 10, 2008, 09:07:12 AM
w  So far I'd have to say the best is my Randall RG80 -112SC, this baby really puts it out ! 2thumbsups  I can't say enough about it's sound or it's durability ! Having to shave the fur off this extra virile wonder is a small price to pay for so much muscle in a small package  jumpgrin  the tonal range is incredible ! the power ,Geeeeeeze ! two channels with a foot switch , clean and dirty !  real spring reverb !   and not to mention the lipstick RED alligator skin to tolex it's wrapped in ! I can hook a 4 speaker  cab up to this NO PROBLEMO!  it eally spreads the joy !

Is that a solid state model?

My bandmate used to have a 1x12 ss Randall and that thing was remarkably loud.
10  Gear / Vintage Gear / Re: My Vintage Amps on: August 09, 2008, 07:48:49 PM
Yes, 200S, good call.  Currently my main gigging amp.
Awesome, it's hard to tell between those 3 amps, they all look pretty much the same.

My next amp will most likely be a Model T.  How's the 200S?

I used to own a Concert Lead, best SS amp I've ever heard.

I love the 200S, right up my street.  60W, which is right in the medium-range I love, single channel, ultra-simple amp.

The Model T, from what I've read, is much more a high-powered modern type tube amp.

I always thought those were cool too.  Are they discontinued?  They never really caught on.  Iirc they were made with P-90's as well.

Welcome!

Is that a Sunn Sorado, 200S or Sceptre?

Either way...  love  love  love

Yes, 200S, good call.  Currently my main gigging amp.
14  General Category / Music / Re: Your Musical History on: August 03, 2008, 06:56:55 AM
Thanks for adding the section about people not in bands. I always wanted to do vocals but I never have the time. I had a weird beginning: My mom played guitar in church so I started to learn music with her. After I started listening to "old" rock, my horizons were opened. I love it all.

Actually that's not a weird start at all.  I started playing in front of people (albeit a small group that met in other people's homes)  in an interdenominational high school group called Young Life.  LOTS of early rockers began by singing or playing in church: Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard,Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and of course the Rev. Al Green.

Just this week I went to a church band rehearsal at a church my family has been attending and is thinking about joining.

Back in the day I used to live with some guys who were growers to put themselves through school.  I personally didn't have anything to do with their operation, but it was always around.

I haven't done anything illegal along those lines since I got married 21 years ago.  I don't really miss it though.  There's plenty of legal ways for me to get in trouble and/or act foolish.
