Laney GH50L
Here are pictures of the Laney GH50L. All tube head known as the "Marshall JCM800 on steroids". And yes.. she lives up to her reputation!

Re: Laney GH50L
It is a LOVELY head, but I wouldn't by any means call it "the JCM800 on steroids".
That post is already taken by: http://www.bassexchange.com/catalog/...050%20head.jpg |
Re: Laney GH50L
haha, hmm well i've played all those amps, and all i can say is if you want a JCM800, then buy one, lol.. laney and orange both make great amps, i really do have to lean towards orange more though, but Marshall is marshall, and orange is orange.. and so on. They all have there own sound.. i dont know if you can compare all three in the same subject
Marshall JCM800 - Metal, Hard Rock .. that Slayer too Wylde sound Laney GH50L - Rock, Punk, - didn't "see Spot run", use this exact amp and everclear i think too Orange - Massive British sound.. That twangy tweed stuff Beatles to niel young to Rock some hard rock..(kid rocks band use this amp) again remember this is just "my" opinion... from my taste and experiences.. |
Re: Laney GH50L
I really like the laney with 6L6GCs. The jcm800 sounds kick ass with 6l6GCs aswell, but it has to be modded to work.
IMO, the Laney is tight and punchy, it's a nice old rock to metal amp. I can hear some similarities in that compared to the jcm800. When I say "on steroids" I mean GH50L has more range stock. JCM800 doesn't drive like the GH50L without an OD pedal. Now when you compare the jcm800 to the Zakk Wylde or Kerry King isn't the same. Granted both sigs are JCM800... but extremely modded Marshall amps. I had a 1985 2203 and it wouldn't do BLS or Slayer stock. While the GH50L could get closer... much closer. I can't say about the orange, never played one. |
Re: Laney GH50L
yeah i guess your right, my buddy has a hotrodded JCM800.. so thats what i compare everything too, i've never accctually played a stock one

Re: Laney GH50L
My GH50 is deffinately that Hot Rodded British tone. Marshall like but more complex IMO. Mine isnt the stunning example in the OP's pic's. Mine is missing the headshell (broken)and has face scratches but works flawlessly. They can get a bit noisey with Gain and boosted. But they responsiveness of the channel is a beautiful thing.
Iommi sounded stellar on this last Heaven and Hell tour and It was all Laney's I believe. Gilberts another one whom did a large bulk of his material with Laney's. I also like the self bias adj and the ability to swap the 6L6's for El34's. Quite a noticeable difference tone wise and with the 34's I was in Vox overdrive meets Plexi territory. Sleeper amps for sure and low $$$ gems. |

>Mine is missing the headshell (broken)...
Are you just playing the naked chassis? Is the wiring and circuitry covered? That can be deadly. Measure your chassis (width, height, depth) and let me see if I can cook something up for you. I'm guessing somewhere in the neighborhood of 22"x2-1/2"x7-1/2" or somewhere thereabouts? Maybe even cooler than what Laney stuck it in to start with. I'll get with you on covering, color, etc. and shoot you the best price I can. |

Re: Laney GH50L
