Sweet, I really like the looks of the Hellraiser esp. in black cherry. How does it play and how are the necks on those?

I have a RGx-420 gun metal grey. Plays like an Ibanez.

Ya, the hellraiser is really nice. The neck is in between a LP and a Ibanez wizard. Some people don't like it because its too thick but i don't mind it at all. What matters is hot comfortable it is, and it is very comfortable.

I have a lot of guitars now, but I'm probably much older than you and I've been down to one guitar at times in my life. One is all you need my friend and as you get older and make more money along come the guitars. It's kind of cruel how when I could have really used all the guitar I have now I couldn't afford them, but now that I can afford them I don't have all the time necessary to play them as much as I used to.

Just keep playing

Nope, no dulcimers. I can only barely play a little banjo and even less mando, and the only reason I can chord on the uke is that partial guitar chords (top 4 strings) work on a uke (though they are in a different key than what's produced on guitar).

We do have some kind of weird antique instrument that is somewhat like a dulcimer, but we just use it as a decoration in our living room. If I remember to, I'll take a look at it tonight and see what it's called. It's some made-up name, apparently back in the day luthiers just made up new instruments that didn't necessarily correspond to anything else.

lol, yeah a mountain dulcimer is not any more complex to play than any other plucked string instrument, but they are modal, not chromatic, which kinda messes with you lol only having certain accidentals, i never could figure out why they didn't just make them chromatic, but i guess most of the "mountain" music which is based on scottish and irish traditional music is mostly modal, but i do have fun playing it i like the drone of it, it's like bag-pipes, but strings instead of wind..... most of my original music on it exploits that lol i just let the low D drone and play melody on the unison strings....... it does have a scottish sound to it.

Well, I climbed up on the shelves and got that thing down, but it only had the name of the company inside the sound-hole. I thought for sure it had some funky-made-up instrument name on it, perhaps it was in an instruction book that we bought with it, but I can't find. Whatever it is, it's funky. It has about four courses of 4 strings each, and then a big batch of courses with 2 strings each. No single strings.

I don't know whut them big fancy words mean! I mean I think I do (chromatic is like a harmonica that only has the notes in one key, right?) but I prolly couldn't tell by looking at the thing anyhow.

I'll climb up the shelves later and get it down again, iirc it does have the inteneded note for each string printed underneath each string.

floydmoline

chromatic is like the guitar (A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#).....
modal is like a mountain dulcimer (D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D) some notes are missing, and on a fretted instrument the frets will be missing too
guitar neck = I I I I I II
mountain dulcimer neck = I I I I I I I

Ah, OK, I had it backwards then.

A'ight, I'm climbing up to get it back down off the shelves...

OK, got it.

First course: DAF#D
2nd course: FCAF
3rd course: FBGG
4th course: ECGC

After that come the courses of two strings each, each the same note. There are 15 courses, beginning at a low C and going up to a high C, with no sharps or flats: C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C.

Since it's missing most sharps and flats I guess it's modal? It comes with a little hammer to hit the strings, consisting of a handle, a metal bendy bit, and a little wooden mallet head on the other end.

How many guitars? More than I actually need. Let's see...

Acoustic: Washburn Dread, A&L 000, Olde Yamaha classical: 3
Electric: LP, SG, Wilshire, Strat, Cyclone, Traveler: 6

Total: 9

floydmoline

LOL yeah that is most deffinatly modal, i am curious now, can you take a picture of it? i'm on a mission to figure out what it is lol, all those courses or strings almost sounds like a sitar, they are modal too, since indian scales are very odd when compared to western chromatic music.

Man I thought this was the gear monkey site. I think I counted that I have 25 guitars and basses. Most are cheapies a few are mainly parts but most I play. Sometimes it takes a year to get back to one but they all have their place. Funny thing is my perfect gibson LP and "V" and fender strat are the least played. I'm a value player and its hard to enjoy anything thats overpriced. I find them uninspiring and wasteful. I play the crap out of my $100 and $150 guitars. So those of you who can't afford more of better. Don't worry about it. I played my $200 frankenstrat and my $90 jr high acoustic as my only guitars for over 20 years. Remember gear is mostly an excuse for not wanting to practice.

jackal
01-11-2010, 08:17 PM
I like my cheap guitars too :) Although I collect gear and admit it slows the practicing down. I still like my $100 epi explorer and have it laying around all the time ready to play.
And this is the gear-monkey site :)

Wow, my last post in this thread, as to number of guitars, was in 2008! And it's now quite aways off of accurate.

I currently have 25 electrics: 20 guitars and 5 basses:

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/8061/guitarcollage09elargere.jpg

Additionally, I have one 6-string acoustic, one 6-string acoustic-electric, and one 12-string acoustic. So I guess my total is 28.

Other instruments include: 1 acoustic-electric mandolin, one banjo, and one ukelele.

Oh sexxy. How does that Fernandes Ravelle play? That's a hot looking axe.

Thanks. It's basically a Lss Paul, as you might expect, except with just a single master volume and tone. The one other difference is that it can coil split so you can get single-coil tones too.

It is a "Deluxe," which sadly they don't make any more. The Deluxe, unlike some of the other models, does not have the "Sustainer" pickup in the neck, which is fine because it's kinda gimmicky and at any rate I would never use it. This model comes with a Seymour Duncan "Jazz" in the neck and "JB" in the bridge, which supposedly are the actual Seymour Duncan guy's favorite combination for rock playing. Which wouldn't matter to me, except that I agree with him that it is a very good combination. Slightly hotter than traditional PAF pickups, but still alnico and not too hot.

Honestly, I would put it in my top 5. Only downside is it's a little heavy.

I was always under the impression that I could only play one guitar at a time, so I always had one electric and one acoustic at any given time. I have the old American made B.C. Rich Bich (Sweet) and an Avarez acoustic (Also sweet) ... But I must admit, after 20 years, I am now in the market for a new electric guitar and I am looking at the Variax or Parker Fly. But I will welcome any advice or recomendations for my new guitar. ;)

Brian Krashpad

I was always under the impression that I could only play one guitar at a time, so I always had one electric and one acoustic at any given time.

Nothing wrong with that, unless you're gigging. At an absolute minimum, you need a second electric as a backup. I never play without a backup, even in church. And if I have a really big stage I might even bring a second backup.

And being unable to play more than one guitar at a time doesn't erase the distinctions between ceramic pickups and alnico, humbuckers and singles, Strats and Teles, 6s and 12s, etc. It's fun to have a lot of different types to play.

vito1
02-06-2010, 05:40 AM
Hi Brian, I haven't gigged in a long time. So long I forgot that I did used to bring a backup guitar. But as to the different variances in them as you fore mentioned, with todays technology you can probably get away with a Parker Fly and a Line6 3x pro. They do all the modeling for you now. What do you think?

I got a lot. Including bass I think I have over 25. Many cost under $100 used and most cost under $200 including a repaired Gibson SG and my main MIA strat. But I also have a gibson LP and V. But I really like the way most of my cheapies play better. I think subconsciously if a guitar costs 4 or 6 times more it should play or sound at least 2 or 3 times better. They never do. For my style the cheapies play better.

Whoa, that's some great scavenging. In particular, how did you find the Gibby SG Faded so low? Had it been repaired or something?

Looking forward to pix!

Yea the sg has a home repaired headstock. So it shows but the neck is perfect and looks decent. I still need to do pix. Specially now that I just got one of the last sx sst ldt2 natural ash strats.

Here's the Squier Vintage Modified I bought a few days ago, sorry for the crappy pic:

Here's a better pic from the Sweetwater site:

This is one of the rare occasions I bought a guitar specifically to flip, since I got it for a price below its resale value. I have 3 other Teles, and though none have rosewood boards and none are thinlines, I can't afford to keep a 4th right now, even an inexpensive one. So I will only have this a short time, I'm guessing. It will go up on local craigslist shortly. At least I got to play it in church last night.

I've been meaning to do that. I am working on my ultimate $1000 guitar collection. That's a collection of guitars that costs in total $1000. Currently in that collection I have my mia strat and a mia gibson sg.

Actually here's my list

Fender Lead II______________________free
Fender strat MIA____________________$200
Fugly fretless bass__________________$20
Dean Vendetta________________________$55
Red Squier Tele and
Johnson acoustic_____________________$50
Johnson resonator____________________$50
SX 24" scale ash strat_______________$60
Gibson SG special faded_____________$160
Epiphone dot studio w hsc___________$140
Silver creek acoustic________________$60
Tobacco burst tele__________________ $50
6 string Rogue Bass_________________$100

Total of____________________________$945
I'll have to collect them up and get a picture.

I finally took a picture of the collection but by then I'd already sold the red squirer tele and the acoustic johnson. I added in an ovation acoustic and a squier strat mini. I think its still under $1000.
Upper left to right.
1: My MIA Strat $200 its a total frankenstein but I loved it so much I was out the door with it and I hadn't even plugged it in yet. I plugged it in when I got home and played it as my main guitar for the next 17 years. It is what I use to measure other guitars.
2: Johnson resonator: $50 off CL. It was a wall hanging. It plays exactly as good as a $1000 model at GC. Too exact. I suspect the same factory :)
3: Fender lead II. Free Won at Jim's House of Guitars in San Diego. I won it at a midnight madness sale during the Rodney King Riots. Consequently a very low turn out for the giveaway. SCORE! BTW it turns out I was the only guy in the whole store not packing heat that night:) Very nice expensive feeling guitar. Set up for slide currently
4: tobacco tele. My first tele I think. I liked it I have 4 or 5 now.
5: Acoustic Ovation. $40 off ebay. Its a fill in for my list. It was banged up and it has a loose internal brace but it plays great and when you rock it it sounds a bit like a distorted acoustic.
6: Squier strat mini. $50 off CL. Another fill in. Plays ok
2nd row:
1: Fugly fretless bass $20 off CL. It was a cheap test to see if I liked fretless. I like it and it plays like a mofo. And its the ugliest POS with strings.
2: SX 24" scale ash strat $60 from rondo. Beautiful but theres something going on with the intonation.
3: 6 string Rogue Bass $100 off ebay. It has something going on with the truss rod but right now it plays well and rings out like a gran piano.
4: Gibson SG special faded $160 off CL. Supposed to be $100 but I got into a bidding war when another buyer showed up. It was set up to be a pos but in 2 min I got it playable and realised its potential. It seems to go out of tune easier than other guitars but the headstock fix seems solid and it plays great, I think its the tuning keys,
5: Silver creek acoustic $60 after a double stack coupon and rebate from MF. Solid woods, great size but a little tinny. But so is the Martin it copies. How well is still to be determined.
6: Epiphone dot studio w hsc $140 off CL. Feels more solid than hollow but it plays great. Killer as a dropped D flat for playing soundgarden.
7: Dean Vendetta $55 off CL. Tried it at a GC blowout for $89 but that was still too expensive for me. :) Its good enough to have been on stage with me for my band and my GC King of the blues tryout.

Well this is my Current $1000 guitar collection. All of these guitars are playable. Some are the best players I have. Some may be sold or traded as stepping stones to other guitars I want and some I could never get rid of. All are friends or family of mine and fill some unique need.

I forgot that this is actually a #of guitars thread. I have 14 or 16 more guitars than the 13 above. So about 27 or so.
I've been cutting back :)
