Not best, but your personal favorite. I'm going with XXX because of the Dark Compressed tone with killer lowend growl and the fact it's 3 channels.
Stock tubes in the XXX isn't that good. However, change out the preamps tubes, throw in a couple 12AT7s or 12DW7s in V1 and V2... and throw some JJ 6L6GCs in there.. and Voila. You have an unbeatable peavey amp. (also try some KT77s instead 6L6)
My second favorite Peavey is the 6505+. I love the tightness, versatility, and 3 channels.
Peavey is doing a great job making quality, good sounding amps. Why can't Mesa and Marshall sell so cheap?
Peavey JSX because it's so universal.

5150 are nice and tight. Probably PVs most all time popular amp.

Oh yes, the VTM60... that's another good one.

Welcome Rob. :wavey:
I couldn't agree more. 6505+ are a great sounding amp... and they are very versatile.

I myself have a Block 5150, and a Script 5150 heads. I really love them bastards. Looking for a combo now. Maybe a II/+ head but i am fine with the plain heads.
I have a XXX halfstack I bought recently. It's nice and versatile. But I am not pee-my-pants thrilled with it. I hope that the tubes and maybe the speakers are letting me down. So I am going to order some 6L6s and if I don't jive with them, they will be spares for the 5150s. And I'll try some EL34s. Since my singer has a JSX. And it sounds nice with EL34s.
I had a Valveking combo. It was nice. Definitely a great beginner tube amp. I have too many PV solid state amps, stored away. A couple of great cheesey 80's tube amp combos. One of them has a phaser built in. I know that.
I really love my PVs.
I vote 5150, though.

Damn Indy!!!
You're a peavey whore!!! I really like peavey, in fact the XXX is my top 5 favorite amp. You are right about the speakers and tubes though, out of the box the XXX isn't good at all.. they need some tweaking (and bias).
First things first.... change those V1 and V2 preamp tube!!! try to experiment with a 12DW7 or 12AT7 in V1 and V2. I liked the 12AT7 in the V2...
I like the amp with 6L6GC. It comes stock with WXT, which are low end tubes. Sovtek does have some nice WXT+ tubes that are much better than the stock wxt.
Lastly, if you get a chance, play the XXX through a Mesa Recto cab or a Marshall cab with Vintage 30s. Or maybe anything with V30s. The Stock xxx Sheffield's just sound raw and grainy to me. V30s will give it more smoothness and balance.
My question to you is how do you like the Block 5150 compared to the sig model. From what I gather the only difference is the tubes that came in it from the factory. The block came with better quality / sounding tubes. Do you find this to be true?

Yea, it's true about the tubes. My Block still has the original Super 6s. They are supposed to last forever. But I am weary about gigging with them now for over 2 years and they still have muster. I will switch them out for WingedCs soon. But if you load both heads with JJs. They sound exactly the same to me.
I tried my XXX with my 1960AX loaded with V30s (because the 5150 blew the factory Greenbacks! ;D). Sounds ok/better. But I am either gonna get some 100watt Celestions for the cab(shame to waste the nicely built, matching cab), or buy either the Randall cab with the 100watters, or 2 100watters and 2 V30s, or the really awesome/to interesting cab with 2 V30s and 1 15incher.
I have toyed with the idea of those Eminence speakers since they are very nicely priced. But there are so many choices and I don't know what I want from them like I do Celestion. Also I thought about refinancing my house ::) to buy some EV speakers. Those things are so expensive.

I voted the 5150. But the Ultra + I had was my favorite Peavey amp. It had the tones of the 5150,JSX,XXX with in it IMO. 3 channels and a highly Active EQ.
I recently had the Script logo 5150 and it was so much more than just a Good Metal amp and a friend played Blues with it at a few gigs and loved it.
Between using the Low and High inputs on the 5150 I could get Good clean and great Crunch and High Gains.
The Classic's are another Really good sounding Amp IMO and sound great with Celestions.
The others Ive not yet really tried.
Peavey amps are VG and get a lot of crap for being a Low $$$ too High Value. Only Crate gets a worse rap IMO.

i still say windsor :-D you'd be surprised what you can do with a single channel amp, the only thing that sucks about the windsors are the gain on them, they have way too much, with 12AX7s and the gain above 7 and they sound like a fuzz pedal, too much saturation, and with that comes the lack of cleans, if peavey had dialed the gain back a little bit they would have had a perfect amp IMO, but they seem to be tailoring their stuff toward the new breed of guitar players who want gain, lotsa gain, and then add a distortion pedal to get even more....... but i like cleans, that is the only reason i have been looking for a valve king, cleans, but i may just mod my windsor and drop the gain down a bit so i actually have some other options other than overdrive and fuzz :-O

I can tell I'm outnumbered... never liked Peaveys
In my giggin days I was strictly a Marshall 100-watt 1970 Superlead kinda guy... wouldn't even Jam with a "Peavey" dude. Course that was the 70's and we all (Marshall Owners) had big heads. I played on a Classic 50 once - wasn't too bad just can't get past the name. Sorry Boys!

/gasp!! i was never a fan of peavey either until a few months ago, i've always been a marshall man, but being unemplyed and poor and wanting a tube amp i got a windsor, and i can say they are decent these days

well a windsor isn't their flag ship model, matter of fact it has been discontinued heh, they are "hard" to get a good sound from, but if you have used a pre-millenium marshall it should be straight forward, just be prepared for the gain...... there is little to no head room on them it goes from off to overdrive to insane distortion, no cleans stock, but if ya swap some 12AT7s in them for the pre-amp tubes, the 12AX7 seems ok for the P.I. it tames it back down to marshall area....... no clue why peavey thought a single channel tube head needed that much gain :-\

I own the 5150, and I absolutely love it. Paired with my MXR noise gate, it's absolutely beautiful. The cleans are actually pretty decent. I can get a pretty good clean tone just by rolling down my volume knob.

5150 is alright i suppose as far as a 2 channel amp goes, i'm not a big fan of 6L6 amps, the infamous fender clean tones are nice and clean ok, but 6L6 amps i personally find a lil bit too bright

Who in the f buys a 5150 and then plays clean? That's like buying a Porsche and driving 10 mph.
